Parent Presentation Recap: Engaging with Your Child’s Soccer Journey
(Presentation from 30th Sept 2024)
Welcome! If you couldn’t attend in person on September 30th, we’ve got you covered with this online version of our parent night. This post will walk you through everything we discussed, ensuring you’re on track for a rewarding season with your child.
Meet Our Team
At the heart of our program is a dedicated team:
- Scott Ansell
- Matt Thomas
- Claude Bolton
- Claire Paterson
- Tarig Bin Zayyad
- Hannah Hawch-Engdahl
- Jonathan Hutton
- Rastislav Diky
- John O’Donnell
- Jose Luis Garcia
These individuals are committed to positively impacting your child’s experience, both on and off the field.
A Quote to Ponder
We shared a resonant quote from Jesse Marsh, Canada’s new national coach:
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, a love of what you are doing.”
Our goal? To nurture a love for the game in every child. Whether they’re on the field or at home watching a match, we want them to enjoy every moment of their soccer journey.
Setting Expectations
Grab that pen and paper! It’s time to jot down your expectations for your child’s soccer experience. Consider not just your own goals but have a conversation with your child about theirs. Here’s what to think about:
- Your aspirations for them as part of the team, club, and program.
- Your expectations from the club—whether it’s communication, training schedules, or team support.
By aligning these expectations, we create a cohesive and supportive environment for all.
Fostering a Growth Mindset
We believe in nurturing the “whole person.” Before seeing our players as athletes, we see them as individuals. Everyone is here to grow, and our focus encompasses:
- Attitudes: Positive and respectful.
- Behaviors: Supportive and open-minded.
- Responsibilities: Being prepared mentally and physically.
- Environment: Ensuring it’s inclusive, safe, and welcoming.
Why Kids Play Sports
Children are motivated by fun, respect, and camaraderie. We focus on:
- Encouraging effort and enjoyment
- Ensuring respectful treatment from coaches
- Highlighting the joy of the game
Red Flags to Watch For
To maintain a positive atmosphere, avoid:
- Punishing mistakes
- Unrealistic expectations
- Overemphasizing winning
Remember, every child develops differently, and it’s vital to celebrate all forms of success.
Role Models and Responsibilities
As adults, we play a vital role in modeling behavior. Your actions can profoundly influence attitudes, behaviors, and aspirations. So:
- Demonstrate respect
- Enjoy every moment
- Remember, it’s your child’s journey
Encouraging Helpful Bystander Behavior
Support every child by recognizing and addressing harmful behaviors. Understand how to intervene appropriately and provide support.
Helpful vs. Hurtful
- Helpful Bystander: Recognizes harm, intervenes, and offers support.
- Hurtful Bystander: Ignoring harmful behavior only perpetuates the issue.
Coaching Styles and Communication
Coaches have different styles that foster various learning experiences:
- Guided Discovery: Challenges and questions.
- Trial and Error: Observation and feedback.
- Command Style: Used sparingly, focusing more on discovery and learning.
Connecting with Coaches
Open lines of communication are crucial. However, give it 24 hours post-game or practice before reaching out. This allows emotions to settle, fostering constructive dialogue.
Our Shared Journey
We are on this path together, parents and staff, all dedicated to nurturing your child’s joy for soccer. Should concerns arise, contact us promptly. Open communication ensures issues are addressed and resolved efficiently.
