We asked Tariq:

1. How long have you been coaching soccer?
I have personally been coaching soccer for around 6 years. However, of those 6 I have consistently been coaching for 3 years (throughout the week, in a specific role).

2. What made you want to become a soccer coach?
The reason I decided to become a soccer coach was based on my experience as a player. The coaching environment and mentors that I had growing up really influenced why I wanted to become a coach. I simply want to do better. I want to be better to the players, I want to help guide them through the system and hopefully provide them opportunities that I may have missed out on during my youth. Being a coach to me is more than simply teaching the game, but honestly being there for the player as a mentor to really help guide them on and off the field. Whatever problem they have, whatever situation they feel they are in, I want them to know that they are not alone, and that I will do my best to help them onto the next step.

3. What do you think are the most important qualities of a successful soccer player?
As a coach, I personally think there are 3 fundamental aspects/qualities that every player should have. Each one  of these aspects can be broken down into further details, which is why I believe they are so fundamental.

  • Confidence: As a player, you must be confident, and don’t confuse that with arrogance. A player must have a positive attitude and a mindset where they understand that they can achieve anything and they are capable of becoming more.
  • 1st Touch – Perfecting your 1st touch is everything to me about the game. It provides you with so many more opportunities on the field regardless of your size, strength or any physical capabilities. Perfecting your touch can have an enormous impact on the time, decisions, and possession of the ball in the game. For me it is fundamental for each player to possess.
  • Purpose – For me, having a purpose not only for playing but the decisions we make on the pitch are fundamental to a successful soccer player. Playing with purpose helps players develop a sense of understanding for the decisions they make on the pitch, and start holding them accountable. In my opinion this leads to better decision making and understanding of the game.

4. What kind of training and development opportunities do you offer your players?
In cochrane we provide a training/playing environment for everyone. Whether you are new to soccer or looking for something more competitive. Personally, as a coach, I like to create an environment where players are not only pushed to fulfil their potential, but are also in an environment where they are not afraid to make mistakes. I want to provide players the opportunity to gain the technical knowledge they need to feel comfortable in all game situations. This comes with direction, feedback and demand from me as a coach, to ensure players can fulfil their soccer goals. For any technical habits players are looking to improve/develop, I can offer.

5. What is your favorite part about coaching soccer?
My favourite part about coaching is how rewarding it feels when the players, coaches or parents around you improve. When I see an improvement in development, passion or individual goals of the groups involved.  I know they’ve taken something away from my coaching. It is a feeling of fulfilment but also pride. Knowing that you made a difference. It also reaffirms you as a coach. Hel;ps instill confidence in your coaching ability. I walk away knowing not only have I improved someone around me, but I have improved myself. Seeing it all come together is what makes it so rewarding, and is hands down the best

6. How would you describe your coaching style?
If I could describe my coaching in a few words, I would be confident, demanding, and aware. I enjoy coaching over the top, but when I need to get involved I will. I’m confident in the knowledge i’m passing on, demanding in what I expect for my players/team, but I’m also aware, and understand what expectations I may need to adjust.
